what is photodna?

Image
PhotoDNA  is a technology developed by  Microsoft  and improved by  Hany Farid  of  Dartmouth College  that computes  hash  values of images, video and audio files to identify similar images. [1]  PhotoDNA is primarily used in the prevention of child pornography, and works by computing a unique hash that represents the image. This hash is computed such that it is resistant to alterations in the image, including resizing and minor color alterations. [1]  It works by converting the image to black and white, resizing it, breaking it into a grid, and looking at intensity gradients or edges. [2] It is used with Microsoft's own services  Bing  and  OneDrive , [3]  as well as by  Google Gmail ,  Twitter , [4]   Facebook , [5]   Adobe Systems [6]  and the  National Center for Missing & Exploited Children , [7]  to whom Microsoft donated the technology. What is a proxy?

Image
Ever wondered why piratebay proxy is not blocked ? Basically your ISP engages in DNS blocking against the pirate Bay. The IP address, a long strong of numbers, is linked to the name pirate Bay (it's much easier to remember) and the DNS server is basically a phone book that links the two together. So when you type piratebay.se the DNS server knows what IP address to send you to. DNS blocking is like removing someone from the phone book. A proxy server acts as a secondary phone book and acts as a middle man. It's like if your parents ban you from speaking with a friend whom they seem to be a bad influence you simply give messages to another friend who communicates with the blocked party. The proxy accesses the site for you from a place where the website is not blocked, and sends that data through to you. Since it's ThePirateBay that often gets blocked and not the hundreds of proxies, the data your internet providers sees flow only leads to the unblocked proxy IP. Do no...

Winrar's strategy to make people buy

Image
Why can we use WINRAR for free even though it constantly requests us to purchase a license? It's called "nagware" and this particular approach is used by someone that doesn't want to force users to pay for the software, but they  really  hope that they will. So they make the program "nag" the user over and over and over in the hopes that they will get so annoyed with the nagging that they'll fork over the cash, even if they'd originally planned not to. it also gives them a leg to stand on when it comes to suing businesses (or at least issuing demand letters) who use their software without a license. They don't especially care about personal use, it's businesses where they get their money.

Type of RAM that reduces power consumption by 99%

Image
Ferroelectric RAM Ferroelectric RAM known as FRAM is similar in construction to the storage cell in widely used DRAM in that both cell types include one capacitor and one access transistor. In a DRAM cell capacitor, a linear dielectric is used, whereas in an FRAM cell capacitor the dielectric structure includes ferroelectric material, typically lead zirconate titanate. FRAM requires far less power to flip the state of the polarity and does so much faster. Power usage about 99% lower than DRAM  FRAM makes  use  of  Ferroelectric  film  to  store  the  data. The ferroelectric film  is  polarised  to  a  “0”  or  “1”  state  when  the  voltage  is  applied  and  remains  stable  in  the  state  even  when  the   voltage  is  removed. Advantages Lower power usage Faster write performance Much larg...

Can we move faster than sound? HYPERLOOP

Image
The Hyperloop concept as it is widely known was proposed by billionaire industrialist Elon Musk , CEO of the aerospace firm SpaceX and the guy behind Tesla A Hyperloop is a proposed mode of passenger and/or freight transportation , first used to describe an open-source vactrain design released by a joint team from Tesla and SpaceX. Hyperloop is a sealed tube or system of tubes through which a pod may travel free of air resistance or friction conveying people or objects at high speed while being very efficient.   Some experts are saying that the proposals ignore the expenses and risks of developing the technology and that the idea is "completely impractical”. Claims have also been made that the Hyperloop is too susceptible to disruption from a power outage or terror attacks to be considered safe Hyperloop   is   planned to be an  inexpensive mode  of  transport that will have a minimal...

Why google glass failed??

Image
One: It emits radiation constantly near your head. Its like you are tying a mobile phone with your head with mobile data turned on! Two: The built in camera raises privacy concerns. You dont want to record all the activities you do 24x7 and send it to internet, right? Three: The design was not so good. It looked awkward on your head! Four: It was not released for all users. So clearly it was stopped only based on fewer reviews Five: Google glass costed $1500 dollars. Who would buy such an expensive "not so important" thing. So finally google stopped the project! Microsoft intern claims that google has altered youtubes code to slow down microsoft edge!!

Image
A Mozilla Firefox programme manager also claimed recently that a separate YouTube redesign made the site “5x slower in Firefox and Edge. Google has denied it altered YouTube code to break  Microsoft Edge , thus slowing down its performance while users streamed YouTube videos -- a claim made by a former Microsoft intern. Microsoft Edge is a graphical web browser included in  Windows 10 , Windows 10 Mobile and Xbox One devices, replacing Internet Explorer as the default web browser. “YouTube does not add code designed to defeat optimizations in other browsers, and works quickly to fix bugs when theya¿re discovered,” a YouTube spokesperson was quoted as saying. Microsoft, however, was yet to comment on the specific claim made by its former intern. “Google has been a helpful partner and we look forward to the journey as we work on the future of Microsoft Edge,” it told The Verge. more on: https://www.hindustantimes.com/tech/google-denies-altering-youtube-...

Optical communications:                                            Optical communications technology has demonstrated unprecedented development over the past three decades and now stands alone as the enabling technology that underpins the global information infrastructure. Over this period, the throughput (measured in bits per second) of lightwave communications systems increased from 100 Mb/s in 1970 to 10 Tb/s in present day commercial systems, which represents an astonishing 100,000-fold increase. The key technologies that fuelled this surge in capacity were wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), improved fibre types, optical amplification and coherent optical networking. Although the introduction of Erbium and Raman fibre amplifiers negated the need for electronic regenerators and enabled dense WDM transmission, the success and performance of these amplifier technol...

DWARF PLANET, NAMED GOBLIN, FOUND WELL BEYOND PLUTO

Image
A scrawny dwarf planet nicknamed the Goblin   has been discovered well beyond Pluto .   A round frozen world just 186 miles (300   kilometers) across, the Goblin was spotted by   astronomers in 2015 around Halloween, thus   its spooky name. But it wasn’t publicly unveiled   until Tuesday following further observations   with ground telescopes. Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for   Science , one of the astronomers who made the   discovery, said the Goblin is on the small end   for a dwarf planet. It is officially known as 2015   TG387 by the International Astronomical Union’s   Minor Planet Center.   This is the third dwarf planet   recently found   to be orbiting on the frigid fringes of   our   solar system . Goblin’s orbit is extremely elongated — so   stretched out, in fact, that it takes 40,000 years   for it to circle the sun .   At its most distant, t...

NEW ZEALAND FINES TRAVELERS WHO WON’T UNLOCK SECURE DEVICES

Image
Visitors to New Zealand can be fined 5,000 New   Zealand dollars ($3,243) for refusing to provide   passwords to unlock electronic devices and   allow customs officials  to examine them under a   new law that a civil liberties group on Thursday   condemned as a grave invasion of privacy. The law came into effect on Oct. 1 as part of an   update of 22-year-old customs legislation. It also   gives customs officials  authority to copy data   found on searched devices . “The traveling public is unlikely to notice much   difference  at the border,” the New Zealand Customs Service said in a statement last week. But the New Zealand Council for Civil Liberties said   the law gives customs officials  the power to force   travelers to unlock their smartphones without   justification , and without legal options for travelers   to challenge an order to enter a password. “Modern   smartphon...

Solar Technologies going to be Cheaper

Image
Molten Salt Storage Technology.  A company called Novatec Solar recently commissioned a promising energy storage solution for solar PV systems using a molten salt storage technology. The process uses inorganic salts to transfer energy generated by solar PV systems into solar thermal using heat transfer fluid rather than oils as some storage system have. The result is that solar plants can operate at temperatures over 500 degrees Celsius, which would result in a much higher power output. This means that costs to store solar would be lowered significantly and utility companies could finally use solar power plants as base load plants rather than to meet peak demand during prime daylight hours. By 2020, solar technologies could account for a significant portion of global power generation, helping economies and businesses guard against rising energy costs and the impact of climate change. However, finding opportunities to further reduce the cost of solar technologies will be ...

Image
Qualcomm has announced that its Snapdragon X50 5G New   Radio (NR) mobile modem chipset was chosen by 19 global   operators for upcoming mobile 5G trials. The chip giant also   received pledges from more than a dozen OEMs to use the   component for   commercial 5G device launches due in 2019. “2018 will be a big year for Qualcomm Technologies and   the mobile industry overall as we work to execute on the   agreed upon 5G NR specification,” said Qualcomm president   Cristiano Amon. “These trials demonstrate how we are working   with global operators to fuel growth and innovation in the   mobile industry and make 5G a reality by supporting a large   number of expected commercial launches in 2019.” Qualcomm had unveiled the Snapdragon X50 in 2016, with   plans to make it commercially available during the first half of   2019. It was designed to enable field trials and early deployments   of 5G net...

HYDROGEN OR BATTERIES? Which is best?

Image
Hydrogen  Vs  Batteries Hydrogen cars   have long ranges RANGE: 700+ km. REFUELING : In a few minutes. CHALLENGE: Few filling stations and expensive production method. ADVANTAGE: Hydrogen can store energy from renewable sources such as solar cells and wind turbines. Battery-powered cars get   their energy from the grid RANGE: A maximum of 500 km. RECHARGING: 1-12 hours. CHALLENGE: Short range and very long charging time. ADVANTAGE: Communicate with the future grid, so the power can be as cheap as possible. Hydrogen stores energy well   The major sales argument for hydrogen is its   ability to store energy. Hydrogen contains 120   mega joules  of energy per kg – compared to 44   for petrol. At best, batteries can store 2-3   mega joules  per kg. a   fully   fueled hydrogen   car has a range of 6-700 km, which is about the   same ...
